Description
Ukrainian as a Foreign Language is the intensive course, which it is aimed to acquaint students with the basics of Ukrainian literary language, to give an idea of its phonetic features, grammar system, to ensure mastery of the lexical minimum, which would allow to use typical for different situations of everyday communication models of utterances. The course is aimed to increase students’ cross-cultural communication competences, to enrich their understanding of the concept of Ukrainian culture. Ukrainian is the national language of Ukraine, and these lessons will help you get a head start in learning the language.
Basic knowledge of the Ukrainian language is necessary for foreign students for social and cultural adaptation in Ukraine. You can also enjoy learning Ukrainian listening to 30 episodes of the Ukrainian Lessons Podcast, to Ukrainian songs and poems.
Learning outcomes
LO 1 Know the dimensions which influence Ukrainian language and culture, its main features
LO 2 Be able to read, speak and write in Ukrainian using simple constructions
LO 3 Be able to develop dialogic speech skills
LO 4 Be able to master a certain number of lexical units and syntactic constructions necessary at the initial stage of studying special subjects, to prepare students for further study of disciplines. The offered materials will help to form abilities and skills of work with scientific texts, and also will prepare for the further perception and understanding of professional speech

The modules of course cover: phonetics, word formation, grammar, stylistics and the study of folk art and modern literary works.
- The Ukrainian alphabet. Consonants and vowels letters. Word stress in Ukrainian
- Greetings and Farewells. Getting acquainted
- Gender of Nouns. Singular and plural nouns
- 7 cases in Ukrainian
- The Pronouns. Personal pronouns. Possessive pronouns
- The Adjectives and the adverbs.
- Numbers and Numerals.
- The verbs. The Present Tense, Past and Future Tense of the Verbs
- Alternation of vowels and consonants
Speech styles. Study of literary works. Reading the poem by Vasyl Symonenko and listening the Ukrainian songs
